TIMELINE

In the Act for the Incorporation of East Greenwich, Rhode Island, two Vaughn brothers, George Vaughan and Daniel Vaughan, were granted land.  Whereas Daniel returned to Newport, George was one of “Those Who Staid and Went Not Away” as Martha McPartland records in her book, The History of East Greenwich, Rhode Island 1677-1960.

Web site author does not know the Vaughn ancestry between John and Gillian Vaughn in the seventeenth century and Charles and Lydia Vaughn in the twentieth century. What is known by Audrey Mae’s oral tradition is that the first Vaughn woman–in her direct ancestry line–in America was Gillian.  Also, the three grandchildren of Charles and Lydia, Audrey Mae, John Edward and Edith Anna, knew that Charles and Lydia were their grandparents. The three children knew that their mother, Mary Jane, was reared on the Vaughn farm that included the Vaughn family cemetery, (aka East Greenwich historical cemetery No. 7) .  When Audrey Mae’s children were growing up in this area of Rhode Island, this Vaughn historical land was where the Rocky Hill Country Fair was held each year.  Later large swap meets were held there. Today this Vaughn homestead land is owned by and on the campus of the New England Institute of Technology.

Vital Records of Rhode Island 1636-1850 by James N. Arnold (Narragansett Historical Publishing Company, 1891) lists the Vaughn births, marriages and deaths in the East Greenwich area in the time period between 1636 and 1850.  Pages 82-85 are records of East Greenwich Vaughn marriages from 1636-1850.  Pages 164-167 are records of the birth dates  and the deaths of Vaughns in East Greenwich during that time period.
