New England Institute of Technology

The land that surrounds the Vaughn family cemetery was at one time the Rocky Hill Fair Grounds at the corner of Route 2 and Division Road. An October 10, 2010 news article in The Providence Journal talked about the New England Tech acquiring land for its new campus on Division Road, just west of Route 2 or the land 360 degrees around our Vaughn family cemetery. On reading this, web site author wrote to President Richard Gouse of the New England Institute of Technology. The following response received was reassuring that the educational institution saw the value of history within it’s campus borders.

Determined to not let this Vaughn historical cemetery be hidden behind boulders, trees, bushes or some other barriers, this web author, who is more importantly a Vaughn descendant, had multiple conversations with the East Greenwich City Directors of Planning  and with Philip Parsons of the New England Institute of Technology.  To date both groups have followed through with their commitment to East Greenwich history as well as modern day planning.

Below is the preliminary plans for New England Institute of Technology. The master plan has the Vaughn cemetery on the south end of the sports area which includes the athletic field and the athletic facility building. Following the regulations, there will be no building or excavation within twenty-five feet (25′) of the cemetery and access to and from the cemetery have been assured. On the preliminary map below, the cemetery is designated by a small rectangle (with a cross in the center of rectangle) on the eastern side of the property.  The Vaughn house was on South County Trail and the cemetery was behind the house.
